Nashville, Tennessee (November 13, 2002) — UMPG Nashville’s songwriters won several major awards during CMA week including BMI Songwriter of the Year – Troy Verges (co-award with Tom Shapiro*), and ASCAP Song of the Year –"Ain’t Nothing 'Bout You" written by UMPG’s Rivers Rutherford (a co-award with “I’m Already There” by Gary Baker*).
Multiple BMI performance awards also went to Troy Verges for "Blessed" (recorded by Martina McBride), "I Would've Loved You Anyway" (recorded by Trisha Yearwood), "Who I Am" (recorded by Jessica Andrews), and "With Me" (recorded by Lonestar). Other BMI performance awards winners included songwriters Matraca Berg for "If I Fall You’re Going Down With Me" (recorded by The Dixie Chicks) and UMPG UK’s Ronan Keating for his song, "The Long Goodbye." ASCAP performance awards went to Rivers Rutherford for "Man of Me," UMPG catalog writers Gary Burr ("You Made Me That Way") and Mark D. Sanders ("I Hope You Dance" – second award). A SESAC performance award went to UMPG catalog writer Kevin Welch for "Millionaire."
During the week Verges also took the Nashville Songwriters Association International’s coveted Writer of the Year Award, in addition to having received a CMA nomination for CMA Single of the Year for "Blessed" recorded by Martina McBride.
Having begun his career as a college intern for UMPG Nashville Sr. VP/GM Pat Higdon more than 7 years ago, Verges has emerged as an "A" list country and pop songwriter and a true UMPG Nashville development success story. Higdon and his team have nurtured Troy every step of the way, coaching/critiquing material, plugging songs to major artists and record executives, and setting up co-writing opportunities in the U.S. and internationally. Verges’ growing discography now boasts three U.S. No. 1 singles, three other Top 10 hits plus songs on new or upcoming releases by Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Sara Evans, Jessica Andrews and Jamie O’Neal releases.
David Renzer, UMPG Worldwide President, praised and congratulated the entire UMPG Nashville creative team and songwriters on their success, and further commented: "The success of songwriter Troy Verges is a classic publishing success story with full credit to Pat, Whitney Williams, Kent Earls and his entire creative staff. The icing on the cake is the success story they have also created with Troy's songs outside of the Nashville country market, including a No. 1 pop hit in Holland with Marco Borsato & Sita, a new song he’s written for the next Celine Dion's album and current material on Paulina Rubio's album."
